Livigno – Skiing and snowboarding on a budget

Snowboarding LivignoAs an absolute beginner on a budget, I loved Livigno. It’s an epic trip from any airport; however, there’s a bonus – its remoteness has earned it a unique VAT-free status, ideal if you want to buy some new gear to look cool and indulge in extended après-ski. Snow coverage is reliable, with skiing and snowboarding on both the Mottolino and Costaccia/Carosello sides of the valley.

Slopes range from 1,815m to 2,795m. Follow the sun by hitting Carosello in the morning and Mottolino in the afternoon. The village stretches along the valley and a free bus transports skiers from one end of town to the other. Each December, teams of snow and ice sculptors compete in the Art in Ice event. The sculptures remain in place until they melt in the spring sunshine. Take a day trip across the border to St Moritz for a taste of glitz and glamour.
